“A lot of people go through the process of applying for asylum without an attorney and
it’s very challenging,” says Chad Doobay, a Government and Public Finance attorney in the
Chicago office who regularly works on asylum cases. “If you do have an attorney, it can raise
your odds of being approved by 300–600 percent. ” Chad serves as a board member for NIJC
and has helped facilitate relationships between the organization and other Katten attorneys
like Pete. As foreign citizens, refugees do not have a right to an attorney, which is why pro
bono involvement is especially crucial. “If someone loses a case here and gets sent home,
they could face persecution, even death,” says Chad. “We want to give these cases attention
so we can make sure our clients receive the absolute best representation.”
