Our Global WORK

Central America

Partnering with Safe Child Immigrant Project, attorneys in the Charlotte office successfully
obtained custody orders for mothers of three unaccompanied minors fleeing gang violence,
sex trafficking and death threats in Central America. In New York, Katten secured immigration
status for a minor who fled her abusive mother in El Salvador to live with her father in the United
States. A team of attorneys in Chicago permanently halted the deportation of a Mexican family
whose case had been pending for three years. The family was seeking asylum because three
members of their immediate family were killed by a drug cartel when one of them refused to
work for the cartel.

Eastern Europe

Along with Human Rights First, a team in New York won asylum for a Transnistrian citizen fleeing
political persecution after she discovered corruption and money laundering within the political party
fighting for Transnistria’s independence from Moldova and reunification with Russia. In retaliation,
her father was killed and the client was kidnapped, tortured and several attempts were made on her
life before she escaped to the United States.

Central Asia

In Chicago, Katten secured asylum for a man from Kazakhstan who was being persecuted for his
sexual orientation.

East Africa

Katten’s Chicago office secured asylum for a teenager from Uganda who was publically caned and
forced by her father to endure countless rapes from a neighbor after she was outed as a lesbian.

West Africa

In Houston, Katten represented a refugee fleeing religious persecution in Mali.

Middle East

In New York, Katten partnered with the International Refugee Assistance Project to help
an Afghani national file for refugee status in the United States. The asylum seeker served as a
cook for the US Government for several years and was therefore under threat from various anti-
American groups in the region.
