P. 3
Letter from the
Chairman and Director of Pro Bono Services
Dear clients and friends,
We are pleased to share with you Katten’s first annual pro
bono review. We consider pro bono to be an ethical obligation
and strive to be leaders in our services. Our attorneys are
encouraged to pursue their own interests and passions, and
the firm supports their efforts by connecting them with aligned
organizations and providing additional legal or administrative
resources where needed. We also offer signature programs
in which attorneys can participate, directly impacting the
communities in which they live and work. Director of Pro Bono Services Jonathan Baum
One such program is the Katten Legal Clinic at José de and Chairman Roger Furey
Diego Community Academy. This year we were honored to
receive the prestigious ABA Pro Bono Publico Award principally for our creation of the clinic, located in
a Chicago public school, where our attorneys assist low-income families and children connected with the
school in tackling issues involving public benefits, housing and family law. Along with other clinics we
support in Los Angeles, Charlotte and Washington, DC, this work fulfills our desire to contribute directly to
our communities, and we were deeply appreciative of the ABA’s recognition.
In addition to our signature programs, we take on discrete pro bono matters addressing some of the most
sensitive and timely issues of the day. This year we represented individuals under extreme duress in their
home countries by helping them gain asylum in the United States, we brought families together through
adoption, and we aided victims of domestic violence in achieving justice against their offenders. We are
honored to have helped these clients and are extremely proud of the efforts and accomplishments of the
attorneys and staff who made this possible.
Particularly at this time of year, we are reminded of and inspired by the tremendous
opportunity we have as lawyers. Our profession is built on the tenets of service and
equitable access to the justice system. At Katten, we believe it is our obligation to
uphold those principles and we take seriously the responsibility incumbent upon us—
with attorneys at all levels providing pro bono service. More than that, we genuinely
enjoy contributing to our communities and appreciate the opportunity to bring the best
of what we do to them. We hope you enjoy learning more about our efforts and we
remain thankful for your continued support.
