Overview

Terence P. ("Terry") Ross is the national co-chair of Katten's Intellectual Property Litigation practice. Terry is a nationally respected first-chair trial attorney with a practice concentrated on civil lawsuits involving intellectual property, media and technology. He has represented clients in numerous high-profile cases, including in the application of intellectual property laws to the Internet and e-commerce. Terry has broad experience in various types of intellectual property disputes, including patent and copyright infringement; trade secret and unfair competition litigation; and trademark/trade name disputes.

Terry's experience at both the trial and appellate levels is extensive. He has tried more than two dozen jury or bench trials, as well as dozens of arbitrations. He has been first chair for 13 Markman hearings in patent cases. He has also conducted numerous preliminary injunction hearings. In addition, Terry has made oral arguments to the Supreme Court of Virginia, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

In addition to representing clients in litigation, Terry is active in representing clients in non-litigation settings. Terry regularly represents content providers in licensing content, as well as in the review/clearance of content. He is frequently retained in connection with "brand protection." This work includes combatting counterfeiting, cross-border enforcement, domain name disputes, policing brand misuse on social media and in e-commerce, and performing clearance searches.

During law school, Terry was a member of the managing board of the Virginia Law Review. Upon graduation, he clerked for Judge Roger Robb on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
