Sanjay Mehta Quoted in Financial Times on Treasury Committee's Review of the UK Tax System

Firm News | March 27, 2018

Sanjay Mehta, Tax partner, was quoted in the Financial Times regarding the three wide-ranging reviews to be carried out by the Treasury Committee into the effectiveness of the United Kingdom's tax system. The prominent Parliamentary Committee will address issues such as whether HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is consistent in its approach to big corporates and individuals and its approach to tackling tax avoidance generally, value added tax after Brexit, and HMRC's handling of tax litigation and disputes. Businesses as well as legal and tax advisers could be called to give evidence before the Committee as it considers potential reforms.

Sanjay commented that the committee may push for harsher penalties for "culpable under-declaration of tax," especially where there is an offshore element, and to increase HMRC's information gathering powers. ("MPs to Embark on Three Wide-Ranging Tax Reviews," March 27, 2018)
