NEW YORK—Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP announced today that Catherine Yoon has joined its Financial Services practice group in New York as special counsel to focus on helping clients better understand and leverage blockchain and other forms of distributed ledger technology.

"Cathy is well known in the blockchain industry. She has a wealth of practical experience and is extremely knowledgeable on the subject," said Wendy Cohen, co-chair of Katten's Financial Services practice in New York.

Yoon most recently served as general counsel at Genesis Block, a New York-based consulting firm that provides business, technology and regulatory advice regarding blockchain technology. Before that, she was a managing director and senior counsel at The Bank of New York Mellon. She began her career as an attorney in the corporate practice of a major New York law firm.

"People often wrongly associate blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies purely with bitcoin and other cryptocurrency when in truth these technologies are beginning to help a wide range of industries process and store transaction data as well as facilitate the execution of transactions through highly cryptographically secure, widely accessible, automated and immutable systems" said Gary DeWaal, who also is special counsel at Katten. He has significant experience in financial services regulatory matters.

"Cathy fully understands blockchain technologies, their benefits, pitfalls, the latest applications, and most importantly for our clients, the relevant law," he added. "We're very excited to have her on our team."

Katten's Financial Services practice offers integrated and comprehensive counsel that helps clients navigate the entire scope of their business including regulatory, transactional, compliance litigation and enforcement, product structuring, tax, and technology matters.
