Our Clients

Katten's Patent attorneys work with businesses of all sizes—from start-ups to small, mid-sized and large domestic companies to multinational corporations—as well as universities and other research institutions in areas including biotechnology and life sciences, electrical and electronic systems, computer hardware and software, e-commerce, business methods, telecommunications, product design and mechanical systems.

Our Services

We advise on all facets of patent protection, including portfolio counseling, enforcement and use. Our team crafts business-sensitive intellectual property strategies to deliver the maximum competitive advantage for clients. We establish and manage strategic domestic and international patent portfolios that are fully aligned with our clients' business objectives, and we create and implement invention identification programs to help identify and seek protection for patentable innovations.

Our team represents and counsels clients in acquisition, licensing, and other transactional and opinion matters. Through the due diligence process, we determine ownership, investigate future intellectual property development, determine a plan for maintenance, discover and correct possible infringement issues, and protect clients that have issued intellectual property rights to third parties.

Clients often turn to our Patent attorneys for advice on patentability, validity, infringement and enforceability issues, and on the clearance of product and process designs. When our clients are faced with potential acquisition, the threat of infringement or actual infringement by others, we provide opinions concerning the validity and valuation of intellectual property.

We routinely prepare and prosecute patent applications in the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Additionally, we secure patent protection for our clients in patent offices throughout the world. Our attorneys are skilled at handling complex USPTO procedures including interferences (now derivation proceedings), ex parte reexaminations, inter partes reexaminations, inter partes reviews, post-grant reviews, reissue applications, protests, supplemental examination, pre-issuance submissions and all forms of petitions.
