Partner Joshua Rubenstein Comments on DOMA Ruling in Stamford Advocate

Firm News | July 2, 2013

Joshua Rubenstein, head of the Trusts and Estates practice, spoke with the Stamford Advocate on the Supreme Court decision striking Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. The ruling will allow all lawfully married same-sex spouses to claim marital rights and privileges under federal law, including retirement and tax benefits. While the impact of the case in states that do not recognize same-sex marriage is yet to be determined, Josh suggests that if same-sex couples want federal benefits, they should get married. If they are married, they should live in a state that recognizes the marriage. (“DOMA Ruling Means Big Retirement Benefits for Gay Marrieds,” June 28, 2013)
