OSHA Inspections Slightly Increased in FY 2017; New OSHA Penalty Maximums for 2018

In FY 2017, OSHA conducted 32,396 inspections compared to 31,948 inspections in FY 2016. This is an increase of 448, or 1.4 percent. Much of the increase occurred in the construction industry, which saw 16,889 visits, an increase of 9 percent, over FY 2016's 15,494. In contrast, the manufacturing sector (the second largest industry group inspected) faced 5 percent fewer inspections (7,198 compared to 7,577). State-plan inspections were also slightly up: 43,551 inspections in FY 2017 compared to 43,164 in FY 2016.
