Health Care partner Michael Callahan was interviewed by Medical Practice Compliance Alert on proposed changes to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Changes to the NPDB are likely coming as a result of a decrease in reports. Michael noted that the lower numbers can likely be attributed to hospitals pursuing remedial measures, such as monitoring, Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPEs) and re-education, prior to reporting. He stated, "Hospitals prefer not to take away privileges and will try other things unless the doctor has crossed a line." Michael recommended that physicians with NPDB concerns should search for NPDB records on themselves, comment on reports being submitted, ask for a periodic review of quality files, and file a rebuttal letter if disciplinary action is being taken.
