Mark Farley Quoted in Government Executive Article on Chemical Safety Board Power Maneuver

Firm News | June 17, 2015

Mark Farley, co-head of the Environmental practice and head of the Workplace Safety practice, is quoted in this article on the controversial designation of Chemical Safety Board (CSB) member Rick Engler as interim acting chairman. Some critics say Engler's special board vote violates transparency rules and grants him too much power while waiting Senate confirmation of President Obama's nomination for permanent CSB chairwoman Vanessa Sutherland. Mark noted that the episode comes "at a watershed moment, when the board has been wracked by poor relationships with Congress, internal strife among board members and poor staff morale at a pretty delicate time in its history." He added that the board's difficulty in achieving consensus on important governance issues will be one of the first tasks the new chairperson will have to confront.
