Major Accident Response: Managing the First 96 Hours

Mark Farley, co-head of the Environmental practice and head of the Workplace Safety practice, wrote this article on an attorney's role in advising a crisis management team after a major accident. The attorney must ensure timely compliance by the company with applicable legal requirements implicated by the crisis, and ensure reasonable steps to protect the company's legal rights and interests. Mark adds that companies should develop reference materials and resources for in-house attorneys in the event of an accident, and that they should routinely conduct crisis response drills. "Only through adequate preparation and practice can an organization hope to ride out and properly manage a crisis," he states.
