Gary DeWaal, Financial Services special counsel, has recently been named to the Virtual Currencies Subcommittee for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Gary also serves as a member of the CFTC's Technology Advisory Committee (TAC), of which the Virtual Currencies Subcommittee falls under. The subcommittee will provide recommendations and work product on a variety of topics for the TAC and, potentially, CFTC consideration. Topics that Gary will work to help the subcommittee address will likely include exploring how the Commodity Exchange Act applies to cryptocurrencies, developing best practices and a self-regulatory model for spot markets, and examining how virtual currency market concerns impact the futures and swaps markets.
