Chris West focuses his Intellectual Property practice area on all services relating to patent application drafting and prosecution, portfolio analysis, patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions, due diligence, and validity and infringement opinions. Chris is experienced in preparing and prosecuting patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), obtaining numerous allowed patents for his various clients. His experience preparing opinions on issued patents and patent landscapes further facilitates a deep understanding of the patent application process.

Chris has a technical background in medicinal chemistry, small molecule drug design, synthetic organic chemistry and drug development. His background provides a deep understanding of the challenges, pitfalls and problems associated with producing pharmaceuticals and the issues associated with their patentability and marketing.

Before joining Katten, Chris spent 15 years working in the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist, focusing on preclinical small molecule drug research. He has experience in a variety of pharmaceutical work environments, from small biotech to large pharma. His work is informed by providing significant contributions in oncology, immunology, cardiovascular, epilepsy and pain-focused projects while working on a variety of molecular targets.

Chris has been published numerous times in scientific journals and is a named co-inventor on several pharmaceutical patents and patent applications.
