Attorney Development

Katten views the development of its attorneys as a collaborative effort between individual attorneys, department heads, firm management and the Attorney Development team. As a result, Katten attorneys receive comprehensive, ongoing legal education and robust career development.   

The key areas of focus for the development of Katten attorneys include:

       Orientation and Integration
  • New associates participate in an annual firmwide orientation program. 
  • Newly promoted and new lateral partners participate in an annual firmwide orientation program.
  • As lateral attorneys join the firm throughout the year, they are provided with an orientation.
  • When new associates and lateral associates join the firm, they are provided with peer mentors to assist with their integration.
  • A series of integration programs are also provided throughout the year to help all new attorneys learn about Katten and become integrated into their practices and the firm.
       Substantive and Professional Skills Training
  • Katten Academy, the in-house training curriculum for associates, covers basic to advanced substantive legal skills. The curriculum is designed and implemented by practice area training partners in conjunction with our highly skilled Attorney Development team.
  • Our business skills curriculum applies to both associates and partners and covers areas such as business development, client service, communication and management skills.
  • Individual attorneys receive one-on-one coaching targeted to specific needs in areas such as writing, communication, leadership and management.
  • Educational support for more experienced attorneys comes through both in-house and external educational programming.
       Career Development and Mentoring
  • All associates go through an annual career development planning process, which involves self-evaluation and goal-setting.
  • Career plans are reviewed by senior partners and discussed with associates at least once a year.
  • Mentoring is highly valued and every interaction between our attorneys is viewed as an opportunity for mentoring.
  • Associates receive formal and/or informal mentoring depending on their practice group.
       Feedback and Communication
  • Associates, staff attorneys and counsel receive formal written feedback twice a year, at mid-year and year-end.
  • Partners make a concerted effort to provide real-time, continuous feedback to their attorneys on an informal basis throughout the year.
  • Communication between associates and firm management is fostered through local and firmwide Associate Committees, which meet regularly.
  • In addition, the Attorney Development team hosts focus groups with associates and partners and disseminates surveys on a regular basis to solicit feedback.
