Peter Sugden, managing partner of Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP, focuses his practice on real estate investment, finance and development, hospitality and leisure, real estate joint ventures and other structured real estate transactions in the UK and across Europe.

Peter advises a wide range of clients including private equity and opportunity funds, institutional investors, property companies, hotel owner operators and pension funds. His transactional experience extends over more than 25 years and spans all asset classes and all types of transactions from asset and corporate sales and purchases to fundings and financings, ground lease deals, debt purchase, portfolio transactions and complex development agreements. He has also acted for developers, particularly in the context of mixed-use schemes.

Prior to joining the firm, Peter was head of the London Real Estate Group at Mayer Brown. He was previously a partner with two other prominent law firms in London.

  • Counsel to GE Real Estate in connection with various Central London office acquisitions, redevelopments, refurbishments, lettings and sales.
  • Acting for Red Bull on the relocation of its UK headquarters to the More London estate in Tooley Street.
  • Counsel to CapCo in its purchase of the Covent Garden estate from Scottish Widows.
  • Counsel to Tishman Speyer in connection with its purchase of Eland House from Land Securities.
  • Counsel to Green Property in connection with the sale of its UK portfolio to Burford.
  • Counsel in connection with numerous forward and investment purchases and full fundings over the years for occupational pension schemes such as ABF, ABP, BHS, Mothercare, Nestle, Molins, ITB and Total.
  • Counsel in connection with numerous acquisitions and sales of investment assets for property companies such as Quintain Estates & Development Plc and Gannon Properties. 
  • Counsel in connection with the debt sale of the Gannon Properties UK portfolio to Development Securities PLC and The William Pears Group and subsequently acting on the liquidation of the portfolio.
  • Counsel to investor clients of Aprirose Real Estate Investment in connection with the acquisitions and sales of various assets.
  • Counsel to J.E. Robert Companies in connection with real estate joint ventures in Turkey, Serbia and Croatia.
  • Counsel to City Lofts Group Plc in connection with large-scale town centre and urban regeneration schemes in Cardiff, Southampton and Chatham.
  • Acting for Aprirose on the forward purchases and financing of a Travelodge Hotel in the Minories, London and a Premier Inn Hotel, Southwark, London and the forward purchase, leaseback and financing of the LEGOLAND Windsor Hotel, at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort theme park, Windsor.
  • Acting for Associated British Foods Pension Scheme on the forward funding of the development of a Travelodge at London Docklands.
  • Representation of private equity firm Benson Elliot on the purchase from administrators of the Novotel Edinburgh Park hotel, in a joint venture with Algonquin, including the renegotiation of the Accor management agreement. 
  • Acting for GE Capital Real Estate on the purchase of the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester from Anschutz and its subsequent sale to Development Securities PLC. 
  • Acting for Irish sponsor Harte Holdings on the purchase and financing of three Central London boutique hotels, including the Cranley and the Royal Park, and their subsequent sales. Entered into joint venture arrangements in relation to the Ramada Excel in London Docklands with Shiva Hotels. Negotiation of management agreements with Interstate.
  • Acting for J.E. Robert Companies on the purchase and financing of the Morethan Hotels portfolio of 11 UK regional Holiday Inn Express hotels, including the Morethan Hotels operating platform.
  • Acting for Singapore Investor KOP Properties on the purchase of 10 Trinity Square in the city of London for conversion to a luxury hotel with a members club.
  • Acting for Shiva Hotels on numerous purchases, financings and developments of UK hotels and on various associated franchise, hotel management, celebrity chef and hotel marketing agreements for new and existing hotels.
  • Acting for Westmont on the purchase of InterContinental Hotel in Prague from Strategic Hotels & Resorts, including assumption of the existing debt.
