Firm News | August 27, 2008

CHICAGO – Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to announce that Lance A. Zinman, a Chicago-based partner in the firm’s Financial Services Practice, has been named one of “40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch” for 2008 by Law Bulletin Publishing Company, publishers of Chicago Lawyer magazine and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.  Mr. Zinman, 35, is featured, along with the other recognized attorneys, in a special supplement to the publications that is currently available.

Law Bulletin Publishing’s “40 Under Forty” honors Illinois attorneys who show a passion for their profession, have had a series of successful outcomes and, above all, demonstrate a dedication and commitment to the legal profession.  Honorees are chosen in a nomination process that evaluates candidates’ career achievements, advancement in their fields and community involvement.

In selecting Mr. Zinman for its list, Law Bulletin Publishing notes that he is “that rarest of lawyers, one who has managed to succeed not only in a single specialty, but in several different areas of the law.”  With respect to his practice in the financial services arena, Law Bulletin Publishing also praises Mr. Zinman for “successfully combining [his] transactional experience and regulatory expertise to create a truly distinct practice,” and notes that his “breadth and depth of experience have led his clients to describe him as one of the city’s top business lawyers.”

Mr. Zinman’s clients similarly praise him.

“Lance is a businessperson’s lawyer,” says Gary DeWaal of international brokerage firm Newedge USA LLC.  “He does not draft nonsense clauses, but works with in-house counsel to create lean, functional documents.  He is a skilled and fair negotiator who helps in-house counsel understand and separate real risk issues from superfluous issues.  Without exception, his work has been of outstanding quality: simple and error-free.”

Bonnie Litt, Managing Director and Associate General Counsel for Goldman, Sachs & Co., concurs, calling him “a skilled and effective lawyer” and noting that Mr. Zinman “knows the law, understands his clients’ businesses, and combines that knowledge and understanding with excellent interpersonal skills to reach solutions that work for all parties.  Lance does his work with a positive and cooperative attitude that never seems to fail him, even when the pressure is intense. These are exceptional and unusual skills that are highly valued by clients.”

Mr. Zinman has a broad range of experience within the corporate and financial regulatory fields.  He focuses his practice on representing hedge funds, commodity pools, proprietary trading firms, private equity funds and investment advisors with respect to a wide range of corporate and regulatory matters.  He also counsels clients in other sectors of the financial services industry, including domestic and foreign exchanges, brokerage firms, swap counterparties and other participants in over-the-counter transactions.  In addition to representing clients in connection with futures, derivatives and securities matters, Mr. Zinman has substantial experience handling complex corporate transactions such as equity and debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic alliances.

Mr. Zinman also represents clients in the sports and entertainment industries including the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland Athletics, in connection with a variety of matters such as player agreements, promotional and sponsorship agreements, television, radio and internet rights agreements, stadium matters and management agreements.

Mr. Zinman earned his B.A., with high honors, from the Honors College of Michigan State University, and his J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law.
