Katten’s John Muir to Receive District Alliance for Safe Housing’s Pillar Award for Exceptional Service to the Organization

Firm News | February 25, 2011

WASHINGTON – Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to announce that John D. Muir, the Washington chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and a partner in the Real Estate Practice, has been recognized by the District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH) to receive its first-ever Pillar Award for outstanding service to the organization. Mr. Muir will be honored at an awards luncheon on March 1 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

The Pillar Award honors community partners who have gone the extra mile to help support the work and mission of DASH. Mr. Muir and a team of Katten attorneys negotiated the financing for DASH’s new facility in the northeast section of the city, which the organization moved into in September of last year.

According to DASH executive director Peg Hacskaylo, the award recognizes Mr. Muir “for personally being a champion for our efforts to bring safe housing and shelter to people experiencing homelessness because of domestic violence.”

The mission of DASH is to ensure access to safe and sustainable refuge for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault through the development and management of safe housing and related services, while increasing the capacity of other community-based organizations to expand housing for victims throughout the District of Columbia.

Mr. Muir focuses his practice on real estate investments, joint ventures and commercial financing transactions. He represents national institutional investors and asset managers, as well as regional investor groups and individual owners in a wide range of commercial real estate transactions. In addition, Mr. Muir has extensive experience in representing national and international lenders in senior and mezzanine acquisition, construction and bridge loans, as well as refinancings of all real estate asset types across the country.

Katten has a long-term commitment to helping the poor, the powerless and the disenfranchised obtain first-rate representation without charge. Attorneys and other legal professionals give their time, resources and talent to serve individuals and organizations in need, to engage in important national litigation or provide transactional representation, to partner with local legal service providers to ensure access to the justice system, and, on occasion, act as virtual general counsel.
