Jeffrey A. Wakolbinger

Chicago Office

Jeffrey Wakolbinger concentrates his practice on matters involving trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, false advertising and trade secrets.

Jeff has represented the owners of many well-known brands in litigation and appeals in federal court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, where he has enforced and defended trademarks used in the technology, entertainment, fashion, telecommunications, automotive, food, pharmaceutical, oil-and-gas and other industries. Jeff also has defended media, fashion, hospitality and pharmaceutical companies in federal court against claims of copyright infringement. His experience has involved pursuing and defending claims of false advertising and trade secret misappropriation, and he has experience in all stages of litigation, from pleadings and preliminary injunctions to discovery, motion practice, preparing for trial and appeal.

Jeff strongly believes that many disputes can be avoided through the adoption and continued review of best practices for due diligence and intellectual property clearance. He regularly counsels clients on steps they can take to avoid litigation in matters involving trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and false advertising by strengthening their own intellectual property rights and by recognizing and avoiding conflicts with the rights of others.

Before joining Katten, Jeff served as a law clerk to a federal district court judge in the Northern District of Illinois and as an associate at a boutique law firm, focusing primarily on counseling, litigation and prosecution involving domestic and foreign trademarks. Before attending law school, where he served as symposium editor of the University of Illinois Law Review, he worked as a musician and recording engineer in Los Angeles. Jeff maintains a strong interest in the arts and regularly devotes time to pro bono matters for up-and-coming artists, having counseled clients in disputes involving record contracts, enforcing their rights of publicity or clearing trademarks for new businesses.

Jeff remains active with the University of Illinois College of Law and regularly serves as a mentor for current law students. He also devotes significant time to his church and currently serves as a director and officer of The Brett Armin Sarcoma Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for victims of sarcoma.
