50th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning

Joshua Rubenstein, head of the Trusts and Estates practice, will lead two presentations at the 50th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning Conference.

Josh will present "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: Advising the Wealthy in Times of Protracted and Unprecedented Political, Economic, Cultural and Scientific Change" on Tuesday, January 12 at 9:00 a.m. (ET). He will share his observations on how difficult it has become to do estate planning and wealth preservation for clients when the rules change constantly. He will address tax changes in the United States and abroad (as they impact one another), enforcement changes leading to FATCA, changes in access to information, and changes in the nature of families and in the frequency of intra-family litigation. Josh also will review what changes are likely to occur in transition, which changes will return to "normal" and which are here to stay, as well as provide suggestions on how best to advise in the meantime.

Josh also will present "Estate Planning for Same-Sex and Unmarried Couples after Obergefell: Detriment or Opportunity?" on Wednesday, January 13 at 3:50 p.m. (ET). This session will examine estate planning detriments and opportunities for unmarried or deemed unmarried same-sex couples, particularly in view of the landmark US Supreme Court decisions of Obergefell, Windsor and Perry.
