Qualifications and Career Profile

Timothy J. Lynes is the Chair of the firm’s Aviation Practice. He has represented manufacturers, lessors, airlines and their insurers for more than 25 years. Mr. Lynes' practice routinely involves aircraft sale agreements, cross-border and tax leases, loans, chattel mortgages, residual value and credit support agreements and aviation insurance policies. He also regularly advises clients on Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration regulatory issues. He has participated in multidistrict litigation arising from aircraft crash disasters and served as lead trial counsel in numerous commercial disputes and damages trials arising from aircraft crashes.

Mr. Lynes has been recognized in the most recent editions of  Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, the Legal Media Group's Guide to the World's Leading Aviation Lawyers and Best of the Best USA, the International Who's Who of Business Lawyers and the International Who's Who of Aviation Lawyers. Mr. Lynes also was an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and taught a course on sales and sales financing.

Articles and Speeches

Mr. Lynes is a frequent author and speaker on a variety of aviation industry topics. Airfinance Journal recently published his article on the continuing battle over federal preemption of aircraft lessor liability, and he has spoken on the subject of liberalizing airline ownership at the Annual New York Airfinance Conference. He co-authored an article on recent legislative and judicial actions on the airline passenger bill of rights for International Law Office, the website connected to the International Bar Association, as well as a chapter in the Handbook of Airline Finance concerning securitization of aircraft lease receivables. Mr. Lynes also is the co-author of the U.S. chapter on air transport published in the 2011 edition of Getting the Deal Through. He has spoken before the Association of South Pacific Airlines, the American Bar Association, the Aviation Industries Conferences and the Institute for International Research on the subjects of aircraft registration, war risk insurance, aircraft and spare parts leasing, aviation insurance, and aircraft credit support. In addition, he has appeared numerous times on CNN's Burden of Proof and other shows to discuss various aviation issues from the perspective of manufacturers and airlines.

Mr. Lynes is a member of the American Bar Association, Business Law and Litigation Sections.

Education and Admissions

Mr. Lynes received his Bachelor of Arts from Fairfield University in 1981 and his Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1984, where he was associate editor of the Gonzaga Law Review. He was the law secretary to the Honorable Richard Newman, Superior Court of the State of New Jersey, Essex County. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia.
