Reid A. Mandel has been in practice for over 27 years, concentrating on federal income taxation and asset securitization. He has represented issuers, investors, investment bankers, trustees and credit enhancers in offerings of interests in pools of receivables. These receivables included commercial real estate loans, manufactured housing loans, home improvement loans, multifamily loans, home equity loans, auto loans, unsecured consumer loans, funding agreements, equipment leases, structured settlements, viatical settlements and time-share receivables. He has represented clients in connection with the structuring, organization and management of investment vehicles such as partnerships, LLCs, real estate investment trusts (REITs), REMICs, grantor trusts, CDOs and CLOs; the creation of investments on a direct or pooled basis for qualified retirement plans, foundations and other tax-exempt organizations; and tax planning for U.S. investments by foreign individuals and corporations. In addition, he has been responsible for the tax planning, disclosures and opinions for offerings of interests in real estate and mortgage loan funds.
An active member of both the Chicago and the American Bar Associations, Mr. Mandel also is a past-chair of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and chairs the Firm’s pro bono program. He is listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business (2004-2010) and in the 2008-2010 editions of Best Lawyers in America.
Mr. Mandel graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and holds a law degree from New York University School of Law. After law school, he served as a Law Clerk to Justice John Simonett of the Supreme Court of Minnesota. He is currently an adjunct professor in the LL.M. Program at John Marshall Law School, for a course in Real Estate Securitization. He is admitted to practice in Illinois.
