Peter D. Ballance concentrates his practice in real estate, representing lenders, financial institutions, developers and property owners in financing and related transactions secured by real property. His practice also includes representing purchasers and sellers in the sale of improved and unimproved real property, and landlords and tenants in large office, industrial and retail lease negotiations. He has recently devoted a significant amount of his time to the representation of institutional lenders in:
- loan restructurings and workouts,
- foreclosures,
- deed-in-lieu and deed-in-the-box transactions, and
- positioning REO assets for sale.
Recent lender representation in non-performing loans and distressed real estate includes a wide variety of residential developments, multifamily condominium projects and commercial and retail projects. Prior to joining Katten, Mr. Ballance’s practice included a focus on business litigation.
As an undergraduate, Mr. Ballance majored in Biology, and received a Bachelor of Science degree
cum laude from the University of New Mexico in 1995. He commenced his post graduate education at Brigham Young University and received a Master of Science degree in Zoology in 1997, directly followed by a position working in the neurobiology research laboratory of Nobel Prize laureate Gerald Edelman at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. In 2001, Mr. Ballance received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law, where he served as an Articles Editor for the
UCLA Entertainment Law Review.
Mr. Ballance is an active member of the Lesbian and Gay Lawyer’s Association of Los Angeles and is an enthusiastic participant in Katten’s GLBT Coalition, an affinity group which focuses on ensuring that the firm’s policies and procedures are inclusive of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) attorneys and staff, and that its recruiting endeavors are geared toward ensuring that Katten is sought after by all top-quality candidates—including those who are GLBT. Mr. Ballance is also a member of the State Bar of California, the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of California, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in California and before the United States District Court for the Southern, Northern and Central Districts of California.
