Maribel Mata Benedict concentrates her practice in public finance matters. Ms. Mata Benedict began her practice in public finance as a sole practitioner in the Latina-owned law firm she established in 1994. She represented underwriters and bond issuers in the capacity of co-bond counsel and co-underwriter counsel in approximately $2.4 billion in bond, tender note and tax anticipation warrant financing transactions.

Since joining Katten in September 2006, Ms. Mata Benedict has worked extensively on tax-exempt and taxable financings for municipalities, other governmental units, and governmental agencies as well as health care facilities, educational institutions and other nonprofit organizations as bond counsel, underwriter counsel and borrower counsel. Ms. Mata Benedict also practices in the area of public finance tax law and arbitrage rebate.

Ms. Mata Benedict is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the American Bar Association, Women in Public Finance, and is an associate member of the Illinois Government Finance Officers Association. She is active in her community and speaks fluent Spanish.

Ms. Mata Benedict earned her B.A. from Loyola University of Chicago in 1986 with majors in Philosophy, Political Science and Classical Civilization. She earned her J.D. from Loyola University School of Law in 1991. She is admitted to practice in Illinois.
