The draft text of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Agreement, which would govern trade relations between virtually all North American and Latin American countries from Canada in the North to Chile in the South, is now available to the public. The agreement seeks to liberalize many areas of international trade, such as agriculture, market access, investment, safeguard measures, government procurement, subsidies, dispute settlement, services, intellectual property and competition policy. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is accepting public comments regarding the substance, scope and objectives of the draft FTAA text until August 22, 2001.
