November 30, 2005
CHICAGO - Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to announce that Laura Keidan Martin, a partner in the Firm’s Health Care Practice, has been named president of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys (IAHA) for a one-year term, beginning January 1, 2006. Founded in 1976, the IAHA provides information and education to attorneys who are employed by or represent healthcare providers, associations of healthcare providers, organizations that accredit healthcare providers, and government agencies that regulate healthcare providers. Its members also include attorneys who teach health law courses at accredited institutions and attorneys who are directors or trustees of healthcare providers.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this organization during an exciting time in health care law," Ms. Martin said. "My primary goal will be to ensure that IAHA meets the educational needs of the Illinois health care bar, particularly in light of the continuing legal education requirements that will take effect in Illinois next year."
A member of the IAHA since 2000, Ms. Martin, 41, has a broad-based health care practice that includes mergers and acquisitions, physician integration strategies, provider joint ventures, antitrust and regulatory compliance. She has counseled hospitals, national ancillary service providers, management companies, MCOs, private equity funds and a variety of other health care clients, helping them structure their affiliations, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, marketing practices and management arrangements to meet state and federal regulatory requirements ranging from anti-kickback laws to licensing statutes to HIPAA. She also has helped insurance companies develop litigation strategies to combat health care fraud and conducted internal investigations on billing and coding matters.
Ms. Martin earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with High Distinction in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1986. She attended Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 1989. Ms. Martin has delivered speeches at numerous national forums on a variety of topics, including the antitrust risks of health care joint ventures, corporate compliance and hot topics in health care law.
"Laura has been a valuable member of our Health Care Practice for a number of years and I can think of no attorney more worthy of this appointment," said Steven R. Olson, national chair of Katten Muchin Rosenman’s Health Care Practice. "Her broad base of knowledge in the area of health care law should serve the IAHA very well."
