Julie L. Gottshall practices nationally in the area of employment, including litigation and counseling on behalf of management. She regularly represents employers in matters arising under federal, state, and local employment laws, including Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), and various state statutes and common law doctrines relating to employment. Ms. Gottshall also represents both companies and individuals in matters relating to unfair competition and the enforcement of restrictive covenants, such as confidentiality and non-compete agreements. In addition to her litigation practice, Ms. Gottshall negotiates and drafts employment and separation agreements, provides management training, and advises employers on implementing personnel policies and mitigating risk in employment decisions.

Ms. Gottshall was appointed to serve on the Roster of Neutrals for the employment panel of the American Arbitration Association, and regularly arbitrates employment matters. Previously, Ms. Gottshall served as an arbitrator for the Cook County Circuit Court mandatory arbitration process, and became certified as a mediator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms. Gottshall also speaks at industry conferences and gives management training sessions through organizations such as the Council on Education in Management and the Institute for Applied Management and Law. She is an active member of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Employee Rights and Responsibilities, and a recent co-chair of its subcommittee on termination issues. Ms. Gottshall has also taught a graduate level course in Human Resource Law at Loyola University’s Institute of Human Resources and Industrial Relations.

Ms. Gottshall was named an “Illinois Super Lawyer” in the area of Labor and Employment Law (2006 and 2008–2012). Ms. Gottshall has also been quoted on cutting-edge employment law issues in publications such as the Chicago Tribune and Inside Counsel.

Due to the national scope of her practice, Ms. Gottshall is admitted to practice in Illinois and the District of Columbia, and before the Court of Appeals for the Seventh and Eleventh Circuits and numerous federal district courts.

Ms. Gottshall graduated with honors from the National Law Center at George Washington University, where she was a member of the George Washington Law Review. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
