Qualifications and Career Profile
Fred M. Santo is National Co-Head of the Financial Services Practice. Mr. Santo’s practice focuses on representing sponsors and investment managers of domestic and international hedge funds, commodity pools and other public and private pooled investment vehicles. He provides advice on securities and futures regulation and all other corporate and related matters that affect these funds and their managers, brokers, financial intermediaries and other financial institutions, and investment professionals.
Prior to joining Katten in 1979, Mr. Santo served as Assistant General Counsel to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (1976–78), Senior Attorney to the Division of Corporate Finance of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1974–76), and as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals (1973).
Associations and Committees
Mr. Santo is a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He is also a member of the Committee on Government Relations of the Managed Futures Association.
Lectures and Articles
Mr. Santo is a frequent lecturer and author on legal topics including current securities and futures regulation affecting domestic and offshore private investment vehicles.
Education and Bar Admissions
Mr. Santo received his undergraduate degree (B.A., 1969) from Binghamton University, Harpur College (f/k/a State University of New York at Binghamton), and his law degrees (J.D., 1973 and LL.M. Taxation, 1978) from Washington College of Law and the Georgetown University Law Center, respectively. He is admitted to practice in New York and the District of Columbia.
