Douglas Rovens focuses his practice on complex commercial, intellectual property, antitrust and environmental litigation issues, representing brokerage firms, public and private companies, and corporate officers and directors. He represents lenders and developers in disputes involving real estate development projects. Mr. Rovens’ intellectual property experience includes patent, copyright and trade secret litigation in the technology sector and in the entertainment industry.
Mr. Rovens has extensive experience trying cases in state and federal courts and representing clients before arbitration panels and administrative agencies.
Representative Experience
- Obtained a $78 million federal court jury verdict including $30 million in punitive damages on behalf of a startup biotechnology company in a case involving interference with venture capital investment, unfair competition and misappropriation of trade secrets
- Obtained a $1 million settlement on behalf of a private real estate investor for bad faith withholding of benefits against a title insurance company
- Obtained a $4.5 million settlement during a contractual arbitration on behalf of a construction company
- Obtained a $850,000 international arbitration award for a franchisee, which was affirmed by the California Supreme Court in a published opinion
- Obtained a defense verdict for a bank vice president in a white collar criminal tax and securities fraud prosecution with respect to a $240 million tax shelter case
- Obtained a $2 million state court jury verdict on behalf of a manufacturing concern against its insurance company for failing to pay benefits due under its airplane lien holder insurance policy
- Obtained numerous defense awards in FINRA arbitration matters
- Obtained permanent injunctive relief in connection with easement disputes over multimillion-dollar residential properties
In 2009 and 2010, Mr. Rovens was named a Southern California Super Lawyer by a survey of his peers distributed by
Law & Politics.
Since 1985 he has served on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) (formerly NASD) Arbitration Panel. He is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the American and Los Angeles County Bar Associations and the State Bar of California.
Mr. Rovens earned his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara and his J.D.,
magna cum laude, from Southwestern University, where he was executive editor of the
Southwestern University Law Review.
