Dawn M. Canty concentrates her practice on complex commercial litigation with recent emphasis on inter-creditor disputes, lender liability claims and real estate litigation. She has also practiced extensively in the technology and manufacturing sectors, including providing advice, counseling and dispute resolution services to computer software, telecommunications and broadband communications clients. She has an extensive national federal court practice, routinely litigating complex commercial disputes in courts and before alternative dispute resolution panels across the country.
Ms. Canty has represented numerous financial institutions in a broad array of commercial disputes, including GE Commercial Finance, UBS, Bank of America, Fifth Third Bank, Corus Construction Venture, Equable Ascent Financial, Nuveen Investments and Breakwater Trading. Ms. Canty has also represented clients in the transportation, technology and manufacturing segments, including American Airlines, Solo Cup Company, Dyson, Career Education Corp., World Access and Zebra Technologies.
Ms. Canty is a counselor who considers her greatest achievements to be those that avoid, rather than foster, litigation. When negotiations fail, however, Ms. Canty is a fierce advocate who enjoys consistent courtroom success. Ms. Canty’s practice includes the defense of securities and consumer fraud class action litigation, as well as negotiating and litigating a wide variety of business disputes.
Ms. Canty has practiced extensively before the American Arbitration Association and before the federal courts in Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware, California and New York, as well as in circuit and appellate courts in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Utah, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Missouri, California and Indiana. She has been recognized in Illinois Super Lawyers (2010–2012).
Ms. Canty is a member of the American Bar Association, has chaired the membership subcommittee of the Class Action and Derivative Suit Committee of the American Bar Association, and is currently an Illinois State liaison.
Ms. Canty graduated from the University of Chicago in 1986 with general and divisional honors, and received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan in 1989. She has practiced with Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP since November 1991.
