Chad J. Doellinger is an experienced commercial litigator. Mr. Doellinger has handled a wide variety of commercial litigation matters in both state and federal courts, with a focus on antitrust, class action defense, unfair competition and intellectual property. He also counsels clients with respect to commercial disputes, intellectual property and advertising matters. Mr. Doellinger is a member of the trial bar for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and has been named a “Rising Star” by Illinois Super Lawyers magazine.

Mr. Doellinger represents clients in a variety of complex commercial disputes. Notable cases in which he has played or is playing a primary or lead role include the following:
  • Dismissal with prejudice of putative nationwide class action claims brought against a Fortune 100 client.
  • Summary judgment on behalf of Nike in intellectual property litigation over “JUST DO IT” trademark.
  • Representation of a Fortune 100 client in putative nationwide federal class action and parallel state suit. Following a successful appellate decision in the state proceeding, the nationwide class was voluntarily dismissed.
  • Representation of leading manufacturer in a Department of Justice investigation with no indictments returned.
  • Dismissal with prejudice and award of attorneys’ fees for Kimberly-Clark against a claim that Kimberly-Clark had infringed a copyright.
  • Successful jury verdict in design patent trial and acting as lead counsel during hearing where the court found the client’s patent to be valid.
  • Dismissal of all claims and award of monetary sanctions against the plaintiff for a suit relating to property seized from the client by the Nazis prior to World War II.

In addition to his practice, Mr. Doellinger is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he has taught since 2003. He has written extensively and spoken around the country on commercial and intellectual property law. Mr. Doellinger co-authored the American Bar Association’s Amicus Curiae Brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in Moseley v. V Secret Catalogue, Inc., No. 01-1015 (March 4, 2003).

Mr. Doellinger holds a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Yale Symposium on Law and Technology, director of the Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order Project, and founder of a new citywide domestic violence clinic. Mr. Doellinger received his undergraduate degrees (B.A. with honors in philosophy, B.S. in political science) from the University of Iowa.
