Cathay Y. N. Smith, an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, concentrates her practice in the area of intellectual property litigation and counseling. Ms. Smith has handled a wide variety of complex intellectual property litigation, including the prosecution and defense of claims involving trademark, trade dress, copyright and patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation and other unfair competition claims. Ms. Smith also has significant experience handling matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
In addition to her litigation experience, Ms. Smith provides counseling to businesses and individuals regarding the clearance, registration, policing and enforcement of trademarks, logos, copyrights and domain names. Her practice involves various industries, such as media, entertainment, fashion and apparel, sports, consumer technology, Internet, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Ms. Smith devotes time to pro bono matters, and uses her fluency in Mandarin Chinese to assist in investigations involving international trade and customs.
Ms. Smith earned her Bachelor of Science degree, with special attainments in commerce, from Washington and Lee University in 2003 and her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law in 2006, where she was selected as a 2006 Chicago Intellectual Property Colloquium Fellow. Ms. Smith is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois.
Ms. Smith is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
