Firm History

In 1974, 24 attorneys formed Katten Muchin Zavis in Chicago. They sought to create a law firm that was more innovative and entrepreneurial than those they had left. Their goal was to provide superb legal services and creative business advice to businesses and individuals while building a full-service national law firm. They took a risk, and they succeeded. Every year since then, Katten has grown and evolved in anticipation of our clients’ changing needs.

Katten opened offices in Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. in 1989. In 2002, Katten expanded its New York and Washington offices and established a presence in Charlotte, N.C., by merging with Rosenman & Colin LLP to become Katten Muchin Zavis Rosenman. Founded in 1912, Rosenman & Colin was a distinguished New York firm with a nearly century-long reputation for providing the highest quality legal work and client service.

On May 2, 2005, the firm became Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP. In June 2005, Katten established a presence in London to service its expanding roster of domestic and international financial services clients. The resulting affiliation, Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP, includes a diverse financial services practice representing banks, securities houses, insurance companies, investment managers and others operating in the financial services arena.

Today, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is the full-service law firm its founding partners envisioned, with more than 600 attorneys across the United States and in London.
