Roger P. Furey is the Managing Partner for the Washington, D.C. office, and is a member of the firm’s Executive and Operating Committee and Board of Directors. Mr. Furey has more than 25 years experience protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights on behalf of his clients, litigating numerous cases in state and federal courts around the country. His litigation experience includes trademark, trade dress, copyright infringement and trade secret misappropriation cases for businesses ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups. Mr. Furey has also previously represented the US Olympic Committee and World Cup USA in nationwide trademark and copyright counterfeit enforcement campaigns that coincided with major sporting events (including the 1994 World Cup, the last FIFA World Cup held in the United States).
Mr. Furey also has substantial experience with false advertising and unfair competition cases, having represented clients in litigation with competitors (under Section 43(a) of the Lanham Act and various state advertising laws) and with regulators (including the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general). Mr. Furey and his team regularly review client advertising campaigns for compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements, and represent clients in advertising disputes referred to the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Furey concentrates on counseling clients on a wide variety of intellectual property and advertising compliance matters, as well as software, information technology and e-commerce business issues.
Mr. Furey is an active member of the International Trademark Association, having made presentations at INTA national meetings on a variety of topics including trademark infringement litigation strategies and techniques. Mr. Furey has been a guest lecturer at the United Stated Patent and Trademark Office, providing presentations on US injunction and other equitable remedies to judges and prosecutors from countries outside the United States. Mr. Furey has also had long involvement in a broad range of pro bono matters, including intellectual property counseling and litigation matters.
Mr. Furey received his JD from the University of Virginia, after obtaining his undergraduate degree from George Mason University. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia, as well as before the US Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth, Ninth, D.C. and Federal Circuits, and the US District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia, the District of Columbia and the District of Maryland.
