John S. Paniaguas concentrates his practices in the area of domestic and international strategic planning of intellectual property with an emphasis on domestic and international patent matters. Mr. Paniaguas has an extensive background in U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution with an emphasis on high technology areas, such as electronic circuits and devices, semiconductor fabrication, ion implant devices, automotive sensors, application specific integrated circuits, computer systems, telecommunications systems, software, optical components, optical systems, electronic communications systems, optical communications systems, lasers, laser weapon systems, avionics, electrical high-voltage equipment, electrical circuit breakers, nuclear energy generation equipment, mechanical components and systems, complex mechanical systems and electro-mechanical systems. Mr. Paniaguas represents privately held, including start-up companies, as well as publicly traded companies.

Mr. Paniaguas is a member of the adjunct faculty at the DePaul University College of Law where he has taught Patent Law and currently teaches Advanced Patent Law. He was the past Chairman of the DePaul University College of Law Advisory Board for the Center for Intellectual Property and Information Technology (CIPLIT) and is currently a member of the Board of Advisors. Mr. Paniaguas has also testified as an expert witness in a patent malpractice case. In 2004, Mr. Paniaguas was awarded the Katten Muchin Rosenman Pro Bono Award for patent law work he performs for inventors and artists. Mr. Paniaguas has also been listed as a Leading Lawyer in Intellectual Property Law by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company.

Mr. Paniaguas writes expert commentaries on emerging issues in patent law for Mathew Bender publications. His recent article, entitled “John S. Paniaguas on the Patentability of Tax Strategies and the Return to State Street Bank & Trust v. Signature Financial Group,” was published in the LexisNexis’ Patent Law Center on January 28, 2008.

Mr. Paniaguas graduated from Purdue University with a B.S.E. in 1973 and from the DePaul University College of Law in 1982. Mr. Paniaguas is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois and Indiana, has more than 10 years of experience as an electrical engineer, and was formerly in-house patent counsel for the McGraw Edison Company and Motorola. He is a member of the bars of the States of Illinois and Indiana, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Paniaguas was formerly a Partner in the patent specialty firms of Fitch, Even, Tabin & Flannery and Mason, Kolehmainen, Rathburn & Wyss.
